Story Time

It was my last class on the last day of my senior year in college. Ten or so of us freshly anointed English Majors gathered around Professor Owen’s desk talking about what’s next.

He asked each of us point blank, “What do you plan to do with your shiny new degree?”

Most of my fellow grads said something about teaching high school English or getting a doctorate in 18th century British Literature. Not me. I said I wanted to be an Advertising Copywriter. Not at all sure what that meant.

There was an awkward pause. A very long, very awkward pause.

“Well, that’s a damn shame,” Professor Owen said.

I was stunned. Stunned.

But there and then, I was determined to become an Advertising Copywriter. Whatever awaited me.

And here we are, many years later. I love this job. It’s not easy and I’m never satisfied, but turning a strategic idea into something creative feeds me. The hard work I put in energizes me. The variety of things I get to create inspires me.

Anything is possible. Literally. Anything.

Turns out Professor Owen had no idea what awaited me either. What a damn shame.
